Citizen introduces its first digital smartwatch, CZ Smart

Classic watchmaker Citizen has long focused on the past – but now it’s more embracing modern technology. CZ Smart is not citizen’s first smartwatch, but it is the company’s first watch to use an all-digital display, bringing a familiar set of applications and functions into traditional design.

Citizen introduces its first digital smartwatch, CZ Smart

At first glance CZ Smart looks very similar to the male model Citizen in general, with a solid bezel, a black anodized aluminum top ring and buttons as well as a dial on the side. But for the first time it does not surround the static analog face – it is a 1.28 AMOLED screen in touch screens. That digital face can be customized to display several different dials, such as Active, Dashboard, Neo and Retro, all of which detail the box design from Citizen’s back catalogue.

Like other smartwatches, CZ Smart can do more than just tell the time. It runs Google Wear OS, so it can display all the usual applications such as alarms, calendars, contacts, stopwatches, and timers. Built-in speakers and microphones allow the wearer to answer phone calls, receive notifications about text messages and emails, and ask Google Assistant questions.

CZ Smart can connect to mobile phones or headphones via Bluetooth, internet via Wi-Fi, GPS for navigation, and NFC to make contactless payments via Google Pay. There’s also a heart rate monitor, accelerometer and gyroscope that all work with Google Fit and other apps to track your steps, sleep, activity and exercise.

Residents report that the battery life is more than 24 hours, and can be quickly recharged up to 80 percent within 40 minutes. CZ Smart is water resistant up to 30 m (98 ft), and is compatible with Android and iPhone devices.

CZ Smart costs US$395, and is currently available for pre-order, with delivery due on December 14.
